External Segments build a segment from users stored in your own database, without copying data into Pushwoosh. In Audience → External Segments → Create external segment, choose the Database type:
- PostgreSQL
- MySQL
- Google BigQuery
- Microsoft SQL Server / Fabric
- Google Analytics 4 audience (no query needed)
For databases, you enter connection details and a Query that returns a single column named user_id. The values must match the Pushwoosh User IDs you set for your users.
For Microsoft SQL Server / Fabric, fill in Host and Port (your server or Fabric SQL analytics endpoint), Database, User, and Password. Microsoft Entra tenant ID is optional: leave it empty for a SQL Server login. For Microsoft Fabric, set it to sign in as a service principal, with the application (client) ID as User and the client secret as Password.
Things to know:
- Use a read-only database account. The host must be publicly reachable; private, internal, or loopback addresses are rejected.
- MySQL connections don't use TLS; SSL mode applies to PostgreSQL only.
- Click Check connection and Check query (each times out after 30 seconds), then Create.
- The database type can't be changed after creation.
