Question:
At the end of the iOS auto-configuration process, uploading the certificate fails with the error "Failed to create certificate". What could be the reason?
Answer:
Auto-configuration creates the APNs certificate for you inside your Apple Developer account, so it needs sufficient permissions there. If your role in the Apple Developer team is limited (for example, Developer, App Manager or Marketing), certificate creation is blocked and you get the "Failed to create certificate" error — per Apple's role permissions, only the Account Holder and Admin roles can submit certificate signing requests and create or revoke certificates.
Ask the Apple Developer Account Holder to grant you the Admin role (or have them run the configuration themselves), then run auto-configuration again.
Recommended alternative: token-based (.p8) configuration
Instead of certificates, you can configure iOS with an APNs Auth Key: upload the .p8 file together with your Team ID, Key ID and Bundle ID. Auth keys do not expire, so you avoid annual certificate renewals and this class of error entirely. See iOS token-based configuration.
